Side by Side: Walmart+ vs. Amazon Prime

07/15/24 01:36 pm

With so many options out there for purchasing your household needs, groceries, clothes, toys and more it can get complicated when choosing the best place for you.

For a while most people defaulted to using Amazon Prime due to its lightning quick shipping times, convenient one-click checkout, and low prices, especially on Prime Deal Days.

However, Walmart+ has been upping their offerings with speedy shipping, specific deal days, and same-day grocery deliveries - it may just be worth your while to make a switch!

We've compared the two offerings so you can make an informed decision based on your needs and location.

Walmart+

Walmart has one of the lowest price points and markups around on groceries, house-hold goods, and toiletries. If you look out for which items have Walmart Cash back, you're stacking even more savings. With W+ you get all that and more, including same-day no fee grocery delivery with a minimum order of $35.

Doing a lot of driving this summer? Walmart+ members get 10 cents off every gallon from Exxon and Mobil stations.  With round trips back and forth to the country every weekend that is a lot of stacked savings!

Price:

$98/Year - however grab the current promotion of $49/year until July 18!

Free 30-Day trial.

Pros:

  • Grocery Shopping:

This Walmart+ service rivals Instacart, Amazon Fresh, Costco Same Day, and the other players in this field. The app keeps the same prices as in-store, as opposed to the other services which inflate prices for the convenience of using the app.

  • Fast Shipping:

2 Day Shipping is on time, even in more remote locations like Upstate NY (where Amazon can take a week to deliver!)

  • Scan 'n Go:

This is huge for people shopping in Walmart locations that have notoriously long lines  (looking at you Monticello!) With this feature you can avoid waiting on line, which is huge especially if you're going a little later at night when a bus full of counselors just pulled up to shop. You simply scan an item with your phone and add it to your physical cart, and pay on your way out, all via your phone!

Cons:

  • Free Shipping Is Not Exclusive to W+

This may not be considered a con per say, but shipping is free for regular Walmart users for orders over $35 as well

Amazon Prime

Amazon is one of the first and biggest online marketplaces with millions of items to choose from. With Amazon Prime you get super quick shipping speeds (depending on your location and the item seller), as well as access to their exclusive Prime Day deals.

Price:

$139/Year

Free 30-Day trial

Pros:

  • Access to Prime Day Deals

A lot of the deals from Prime Day, Black Friday, and other huge savings days can really stack up to save money, with this past Prime Day having some of the lowest prices we've seen on household brands.

  • Integrated with Stores Such As Zappos

This is a handy feature if you tend to shop at some of these stores. With Zappos, Shopbop and Woot you will use your Amazon account, with your payment info and shipping addresses. This makes it super simple to checkout as well as track orders.

  • Great Entertainment Options

Prime Video and Amazon Music are included in your Prime membership!

Cons:

  • Lagging Delivery Times

Prime used to be the #1 destination for quick, even next-day shipping. However, since Covid things have slowed down in this department. And in certain, non-city locations shipping can take up to a week.

  • Same-Day Grocery Shopping Has High Minimums

Amazon Fresh used to have amazing features, such as no minimum, no fee same-day shopping with pretty good groceries in stock. However, as of a year or so they've changed it. Now there is either $100 or $150 minimum depending on location to schedule in a grocery delivery! We think there are better options than this, such as Walmart+ same-day deliveries.
